The D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School Marching Band won the Colorado 3A state championship on Oct. 29. The competition was held at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado.

This state championship marks the seventh in the past eight years for the D’Evelyn Marching Band, with the first six achieved at the 2A level to go with this year’s 3A championship. The D’Evelyn Marching Band won this year’s state championship in their first year as a member of the Class 3A competition, after moving up from Class 2A in 2017.

D’Evelyn Marching Band is led by the Band Director, Becky Paschke, and drum majors, D’Evelyn senior Emily Smith and junior Evie Hupka.

After the state competition, Paschke said, “It was a magical year with the hardest working group of kids I’ve ever worked with. The band had a goal this year of being proud of every show they performed. This year the band had the perfect storm of peaking at state finals competition.”

Marching band is a unique activity, as student leaders play an instrumental role in the success of the program. D’Evelyn Marching Band was fortunate to have the leadership of two outstanding drum majors, in Smith and Hupka.

“We started this season with the goal to be friendly and respectful within the band,” said Smith. “Our goals were more than just being successful in competition. We created a very unique and supportive community within the band, and we’re very proud of that accomplishment as well.”

She continued by noting that “we are proud of all aspects of our season, not just the trophies.”

Hupka added, “I thought it was really cool that we took the show concept from our band staff, and the students made it our own and achieved great success in the process.”

D’Evelyn won the championship in competition of nine other teams that earned placement in the state competition by way of the regional competitions held two weeks ago. The D’Evelyn band features 78 students from grades 8 - 12. With only seven seniors in the band this year, the future is bright for the D’Evelyn Marching Band.

“I am especially proud of the effort and dedication shown by D’Evelyn Marching Band members throughout the 2018 season,” said D’Evelyn principal Josh Griffin. “These student-performers and the band staff have worked diligently on their performance since July, culminating in their remarkable show at the state championships on Monday.
