DENVER, CO – Six students from D'Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School's class of 2019 were recognized as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

The D'Evelyn seniors honored were:

  • Samantha Bakes
  • Cadence Fisher
  • Emma Dukesherer
  • Alan Li
  • Rory Devin
  • Ian Widmann

"The semifinalist recognition received by these six outstanding students reflects their intellect, work ethic, and commitment to excellence," said D'Evelyn principal Josh Griffin in a statement. "The accomplishments of these six students highlights what can be accomplished when students dedicate themselves to excellence in a strong, liberal arts program."

The number of students represents 4 percent of the school's graduating seniors, Griffin pointed out. Nationwide, only 1 percent of students taking the National Merit qualifying exam are semifinalists.

The six D'Evelyn students were among 23 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists attending Jeffco Public Schools, and the 221 students recognized across the state of Colorado for the 2018-19 school year. In last year's D'Evelyn Class of 2018, seven students won National Merit scholarships.

Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Program chooses 16,000 students from a pool of 1.6 million students for National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. The semifinalists are invited to submit an application to earn finalist status. Finalists are eligible to receive a variety of academic awards/scholarships, the district said in a press release.
