COLORADO SPRINGS — In the biggest meet of the year, the D’Evelyn girls cross country team dominated much of the 3A field.

At state cross country on Saturday morning at the Norris Penrose Event Center, the Jaguars took third as a team with 135 points just behind the Classical Academy and Peak to Peak Charter.

“I’m just really proud of the whole team,” sophomore Taylor Haerbig said. “We crushed it, and we tried our best.”

Within that third-place team mark, the Jaguars saw one of their own earn a top-10 finish. Barely squeaking in at 10th place, freshman Eliana Thompson completed the race in 19:15.3. Haerbig trailed right behind at 13th, just 22 seconds later. To round out the top three girls who scored, sophomore Kati Livingood clocked in at 20:28.6, which was good for 31st.

All season long, the D’Evelyn’s girls’ team chemistry has only made it stronger — even if one of the key runners was out until just a few weeks before the state race.

“We’re just really close, and we work together,” Thompson said. “I just so appreciate what my family and teammates and God have done for me.”

Throughout most of the season, Taylor’s twin sister Katy had missed the action with a leg injury. That didn’t stop her from putting up a good race on Saturday, in which she ran in 20:55.3 for 44th place.

On the boys’ side, the Jaguars sent only senior Caleb Feagans, who finished 137th with a time of 19:24.5.

Chatfield

As the lone representative from Chatfield, junior Cole Nash didn’t waste the opportunity.

With a time of 16:17.7, Nash rolled in at ninth place amid a tough 5A competition.

“That was my whole goal since state pretty much ended last year. I was 35th,” Nash said. “It was so hard. Dakota alone was enough for me to try for top-10. They just have such an amazing team. They have three guys in the top-10 alone.”

He attributes much of that success to his summer workout program, in which he ran 440 miles in 10 weeks.

Front Range Christian

As Front Range Christian’s only state qualifier, sophomore Andre Stablein felt he had something to prove. He, too, reined in a top-10 finish as he narrowly beat out Ellicott’s Jodzuel Juarez for the final podium spot, rolling in at 17:27.5.

He improved slightly from his freshman state campaign, during which he finished 25th. Stablein was 29 seconds faster this year.

“I saw a large improvement, not so much at the beginning of the season, but as the season progressed, I got a lot better,” Stablein said. “I can only thank God for top-10. That was incredible.”

As one of three members of his entire cross country team, Stablein was hoping he could run the race with teammate Anthony Earl, who just barely missed the cut to make it to Colorado Springs. Still, he said he was happy to represent his school, even if he had to do it alone.
