Credit Recovery

Students who earned lower than a C (70%) in their math class cannot advance to the next class in the Saxon math progression. Because summer school has an extremely fast pace and is done mostly through independent study, the Math Department strongly recommends that these students repeat the math course the following school year, rather than taking summer school.

Students who struggled to learn the material with help from their teacher during the school year will likely struggle even more in this independent study setting. Students who wish to earn credit for one semester must complete approximately 60 problem sets in one-third of the time they have during the school year. Students who need a full year of credit must complete approximately 120 problem sets in one-sixth of the time they have during the school year.

Students will turn in problem sets every week through Google Classroom from early June through the end of July and take three in-person tests and an in-person final exam in July. 

High school English courses will use Google Classroom with weekly in-person meetings for assessments (essays or tests). Seventh and eighth graders will take courses through Schoology. Sixth grade will use Intellego Homework Center.

Ideally, students will retake failed courses in the regular school year for more consistent support and better pacing. The purpose of this program is to recover credit during the summer. High school students are expected to follow the course outline provided in Google Classroom and to re-engage with material covered during the school year. Student attendance is required each week to turn in work and to complete assessments. 

Coursework will be available at the beginning of June, with the first meeting occurring the following week Eight assessments will be scheduled, with the final exam at the end of July. Students may miss one class meeting as arranged with the instructor. Students must earn a C or above on two of the compositions and earn 70% or above on the final exam.

Students who did not earn a C (70%) in their language class are unable to advance to the next class in the world language progression. The World Language Department strongly recommends these students repeat the world language course the following school year rather than taking the summer school option.

While not recommended, students who earned a D (60-69%) are eligible for the summer school option to attempt to earn a passing grade (70% or better). Students who fail the course (59% or lower) must repeat the course the following year.

The sole purpose of this program is to qualify for advancement to the next level of a language; no course credit will be earned, nor will a grade be added to the student’s transcript. Therefore, students who earn an “F” in a D’Evelyn world language course must repeat that course the following year to maintain adequate credits to graduate.

Students should speak with their world language teacher about this option and their wish to complete it by the end of the school year. 

The assigned workbook pages for the course must be fully completed with at least 90% accuracy to be eligible to take the makeup exam. A teacher will review the student’s workbook prior to administering the makeup exam. There is no written work due in the textbook or for readers, but students are expected to know all the material (vocabulary, verb conjugations, cultural content, etc.) well enough to pass the makeup final exam with at least a 70%.

When the student passes the makeup administration of the final exam with a score of 70% or higher, the teacher will inform the student, parents, department manager and administrator in charge of scheduling that the student should be enrolled in the subsequent level of language study.

If the student fails to reach 70% or higher on the makeup final exam, they will be placed in the original language course during the subsequent school year.

All courses will run from early June through late July.

Because three rather than four years of science are required at D'Evelyn for graduation and our curriculum is unique in the school district, science faculty members strongly recommends that students who fail a science class benefit most by repeating the course during the subsequent school year. Students may repeat either or both semesters of a science course at the junior or senior high school level.

In our estimation, a student who fails two years of science is unlikely to graduate from D'Evelyn on time. Our experience indicates that students who fail science classes at D’Evelyn almost always do so due to a lack of work ethic and, therefore, rarely perform better in summer school.

However, the following summer school options are available for those students who, for scheduling reasons, cannot repeat the course. These options are intended for makeup credit by students who have previously taken and failed the course and may not be used for advancement (i.e., “skipping” a course normally offered during the regular school year).

If a student is in danger of failing, the appropriate science teacher will contact the student and parents. In the case that a student uses one of the summer school options to make up a course after failing it, the original “F” in the science course will stand on the student's transcript as separate from the summer school grade.

All courses will run from early June through July.

• Seventh grade – American School Middle School Life Science (final taken in-person)
• Eighth grade – American School Middle School Physical Science (final taken in-person)
• Ninth grade – American School Biology (final taken in-person)
• 10th grade – Sophomores failing chemistry will need to retake the course as juniors
• 11th grade – Juniors who fail physics will need to retake the course as seniors. 

These courses cost $275 per semester and $325 for the full year.
