Sixth Grade

Welcome to all new D’Evelyn students and families. The sixth-grade program begins the journey into D’Evelyn’s rigorous liberal arts education. High expectations in academics and behavior are introduced to incoming students as, “The rigorous program we have outlined is not possible without an orderly atmosphere where achievement is valued” (FD 17). Our curriculum at the sixth-grade level helps build the foundation students will need for success in subsequent academic courses and life.  This aligns with D’Evelyn’s, “philosophy that a foundation of basic skills, knowledge, and personal well-being is essential for further learning. Our school specifically builds upon the basic skill and knowledge components” (FD 19).

This page contains some basic information including a school supply list, English required reading, Outdoor Lab details and information on the sixth-grade team.

What Makes Sixth Grade Unique

  • Sixth-grade students have their own wing of the building and eat during a separate lunchtime
    • This intentional separation provides our youngest students the opportunity to learn and integrate into D’Evelyn’s model of instruction without additional distractions
    • Providing our sixth-graders with their own space helps them feel connected and minimizes the need to travel long distances between classes
  • Sixth-grade teachers each teach courses in two content areas (i.e. Reading and Math).  In other departments, each teacher only instructs in one content area.
    • This allows us to horizontally align our curriculum and expectations to ensure student success and preparation in a consistent and predictable environment
  • Sixth-grade students are assigned to a homeroom teacher
    • Students return to their 1st Period teacher for 7th-hour Monday through Thursday
    • This helps students build strong study habits in a familiar environment
  • Sixth-grade students have the opportunity to attend Outdoor Lab
    • D’Evelyn is unique in the district in that we have sixth-grade students and high school leaders from the same school participating in Outdoor Lab together
    • This allows us to build strong and lasting connections between our youngest and oldest students, helping build a strong community and sense of belonging for all
