Quotes of the Day: "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” Jim Ryun

National Day: National Frog Jumping Day

Forty works of art created by D'Evelyn Jr. and Sr. High School students are on exhibit in the 2020 Jeffco Schools Foundation Annual Art Show. The traditional gallery shows are usually installed each spring at both the Arvada Center and the Lakewood Cultural Centers. This year, due to COVID-19 and the shift of schools to a remote learning platform, the art shows shifted too! None the less, Mrs. Haller and Mrs. Lawrence sent the work of our outstanding artists to the virtual art show. Check it out at http://www.jeffcoarts.com To find D’Evelyn go to webpage > School Galleries > Charter and Options School

Senior Student Athletes of the Week Ally May and Jack Grant!

Ally May is the female Senior Athlete of the week. A dual threat, Ally excelled on both the track and swim teams all four years. On the Track & Field team, Ally has participated in events ranging from the 100m to the 800m, as well as several relay teams. Always willing to run whatever event had an open spot, Ally could be counted on to give her best each and every race. Ally was also part of Girls Mentoring, Interact, FCA, and was an officer for Mu Alpha Theta. Ally will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall and plans on going to medical school.

The male Senior Student Athlete of the week is Jack Grant.  Jack was a guard on the Boys Basketball Team and is a versatile member of the Track Team. Hi, my name is Phoenix Lee, a sophomore at D'Evelyn High School. I am committed to giving back to the community, and one way to do so is by supporting the local businesses of Jefferson County and providing meals for the hospitals, health care workers, and EMTs during this time of uncertainty. I have created a GoFundMe fundraiser in use of buying food from local restaurants for the healthcare workers. These workers work in tough conditions, where the hospital cafeterias often do not provide sufficient food and in many cases, are closed, so that is why I hope to provide food and help get them through their day. If we work together we can make this possible, and with your donation, you can help the community around you.

SHOPPING MORE ONLINE?  Try using AmazonSmile which is a simple way for D'Evelyn community members to support our school. AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your purchases to the charity (D'Evelyn Education Foundation). It costs you and D'Evelyn nothing, and it's just like shopping on Amazon normally. Items that are eligible for donations will be marked as such on their product pages. The only real catch is you must start your shopping at smile.amazon.com, This is a great way to support D'Evelyn!

Scholars of the Month:

Junior High Girl:

Hailey Botsford, 8th grade

Hailey gives 100% of her attention during English class, and I have watched her development into a confident scholar over the course of this year.  When I look at Hailey during class, she is looking at me, paying attention, and getting the most out of her class time.  Hailey is also an excellent citizen in the classroom, making her an exemplary D'Evelyn student who combines work ethic with strong character.  Thank you, Hailey! - Ms. Young

Junior High Boy:

Michael Otegui 7th

Michael works hard in his English class to understand the concepts and materials. He asks questions and works hard to complete all assignments to the best of his ability. He asks thoughtful questions and offers clever observations on the literary works. His work ethic is appreciated. (nominated by Marcella Hanna)

Senior High Girl:

Abigail Hoffmeister, a junior whose affirmingly cheerful interest in American Literature makes her a valuable model for salient discussion and for the delight in learning that our school's Founders sought to instill and honor in young minds.  (nominated by Brian Haller)

Senior High Boy:

I would like to nominate Joshua McFeeters. Josh is the most perceptive and analytical student whom I have had in many years. Whether we are in school or in our virtual class rooms, Josh always puts forth 100% effort. He takes pleasure in reading, discussing, and analyzing literature and is an English teacher’s dream student ! (Nominated by Jennifer Tompkins)

Teacher of the Month:

Sarah Newcomb:

  • She goes above and beyond everyday. She make everyone's day by smiling and being happy. Science is my favorite class because even in a bad situation she brings out the good

  • During this period of remote learning, Mrs. Newcomb has been AWESOME. She posts daily Science videos which are both fun & informative. Our student looks forward to it every day.

  • Ms. Newcomb seems to go above and beyond. I have not been at an after school event that she has not been at volunteering or just participating. The instruction she gives in the area of science (I am a scientist) appears to be top notch. I love the expectations she has of her students.

  • Mrs. Newcomb should get a thousand awards. First of all, she goes way out of her way to make sure we have the best possible learning experience. My favorite part of the school day is just getting to be with her, and learn from her. She always knows how to make us laugh, and the assignments are always so much fun. Next, Mrs. Newcomb is so helpful and organized. With her help, I now am very organized, and can finish my work more efficiently. This skill will definitely benefit me for years to come. Also, Mrs. Newcomb is such a nice person. She is so funny and always wants to help. Even if it is not science you need help with, her door is always open and she is always welcoming students into her classroom! Out of all of my great teachers I’ve ever had combined, none of them can fill Mrs. Newcomb’s shoes. She is such a smart and sweet person, and I know that even if you are with her for one second, you know she will forever be your role model, and someone you can always look up to. Lastly, Mrs. Newcomb treats you like a friend. I’ve never ever had a teacher before that will just come up and talk to you like you are friends. You can be having the worst day of your life, and Mrs. Newcomb can make it better in a second. Mrs. Newcomb is so awesome, and so so so smart. This is why Mrs. Newcomb should get this award.

Megan Bender:

  • There is not a day where Ms. Bender's joy of teaching is not displayed to students. Her love and passion for Spanish is easily seen in the classroom and hallway. Students often times talk about how much they enjoy going to her class because of the positive space she has created. She also is not afraid to try new instructional techniques to raise the level of academic rigor in her classroom. Overall, Ms. Bender is an amazing teacher and D'Evelyn's Foreign Language Department would not be the same without her.

  • Sra. Bender is doing really well with online school. She always gets up early to post the assignments, and makes it really clear to what we have to do. Although it harder to learn Spanish online, she also makes slides where sheś talking over them, to make sure we learn it. Gracias!

  • Mrs. Bender is always full of energy and excitement as soon as I walk in the door. She keeps her students engaged in the learning and makes sure we understand things before she moves on. Her enthusiasm and funny personality make me excited to take Spanish! I'm looking forward to the rest of the year learning Spanish.
  • Mrs.Bender is always great at explaining issues when students are not able to understand. She gets along well with other teachers, Mrs.Bender promotes the calligraphy club, which overall helps the school community, Mrs.Benders dedication to Spanish and calligraphy club is so overwhelming sometimes i feel like we never deserved her. Mrs.Bender is a great leader in all ways, she is very hilarious, kind, hardworking, understanding, and overall just a great person. :)

Congratulations Mrs. Newcomb and Mrs. Bender!

Bender!

We want to keep the positivity up we had from starting so many new traditions like painting our parking spots and setting records for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  We are starting another new tradition: Senior Sweepstakes!  We've collected some great prizes we will be giving away through the D'Evelyn Seniors Instagram page, @develyn2020, starting Monday, May 4th.  Each day (Monday, May 4th through Friday, May 8th) at 4:30pm, Student Council representatives will host an Instagram Live give-away of prizes to help you embark on the next chapter of your life.  All members of the Class of 2020 are automatically entered.  You could win a smart TV, Alexa microwaves, Alexa Echo Dot, waterproof speakers, Yeti Ramblers, and much much more!  Be sure to follow us and check in Instagram Live to know if you've won!

SUPPORT D'EVELYN SUPPORTERS!  Our local business supporters who have so generously given to the D’Evelyn community are now in need of your support.  Let us illustrate to them how incredibly grateful we are for their past generosity by frequenting their business.  Now is the opportune time to give back to those who have charitably donated to our school.  To see the list go Support for DEF Local Businesses List.

We have begun to process refunds for spring sports fees, prom and the $65.00 for graduation.  We are working to manually process these reimbursements one-by-one, so please accept our apologies that this process will take some time to complete, as we have 100s of students that need to be refunded.

The GoFundMe link is below: gf.me/u/xyc6yg

SHOPPING MORE ONLINE?  Try using AmazonSmile which is a simple way for D'Evelyn community members to support our school. AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your purchases to the charity (D'Evelyn Education Foundation). It costs you and D'Evelyn nothing, and it's just like shopping on Amazon normally. Items that are eligible for donations will be marked as such on their product pages. The only real catch is you must start your shopping at smile.amazon.com, This is a great way to support D'Evelyn!

Come join a fun team!  Here’s how you can get involved:

Dash Chair:

Are you good at organizing people?  The Dash Crew needs you!  We are looking for 1-2 people to shadow our current Dash chairs.  We have all the information organized in google drive/gmail and we have an amazing team of volunteers for the various Dash jobs.  You would just need to oversee the team and keep things moving along.  Most work can be done at home and on your own time.

Sponsorship:

We are looking for 1-2 people to help with sponsorship.  We have all sponsorship documentation in google drive so you aren't having to "reinvent the wheel."  We have also built a healthy list of sponsors.  We just need people to follow up with them and keep things organized.  Most of the work is done on the computer and during the months of March-May.

Smaller Jobs:

Not sure where you want to help or maybe you can take on pieces but not the whole thing?  Email us at develyndashcrew@gmail.com.  We can use your help in any way and would love to work with you!

Our next donation from American Furniture Warehouse will be $758.10! When shopping at American Furniture please mention D’Evelyn or give the ID#DEVHS5   Thank you D’Evelyn Families for mentioning the school when purchasing furniture!

Jags, please continue to scan your receipts on the Box Tops for Education app! This is an easy way to earn free money for D'Evelyn. You can also bring in unexpired Box Tops to the blue collection bin in the main office. Thanks for your continued support!
