The D’Evelyn Junior-Senior High School Standard of Dress (ST-06-R2 Dress Code – Regulation) is designed to provide guidelines for the appropriate dress at school to foster an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning (FD 2).

The dress code also promotes noble values, such as integrity, honor and respect for self and others (FD 12). Staff and students are expected to comply with our standard of dress during the school day and to represent D’Evelyn with dignity by our attire at all school-sanctioned events, inside or outside the walls of the building.

While D’Evelyn respects students’ rights to express themselves in the way they dress, all clothing must be appropriate for a grade 6-12 educational environment. Appearance or dress that is disruptive to the educational process; that constitutes a health or safety hazard; that has the potential of causing personal embarrassment; that displays divisive, vulgar, or derogatory comments; or that causes any kind of classroom disruption, is prohibited.

Minimum Requirements

Clothing must cover areas from one armpit across to the other armpit, with continuous coverage on the front, back and sides extending down the leg at least to the fingertips when arms are held straight, and fully covering the midthigh (see image). Tops must have shoulder straps of at least two finger widths.
Footwear must be worn at all times and should be appropriate for the class activities.
See-through or mesh garments must be worn with appropriate coverage underneath that meets the minimum requirements of No. 1 above.
Headgear, including hats, hoods and caps are not allowed unless permitted by school administration for religious, medical or other reasons.
Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

Additional Requirements

Clothing must cover all undergarments and undergarments must not be visible.
Clothing may not depict, imply, advertise or advocate illegal, violent or lewd conduct, weapons, or the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances.
Clothing may not depict or imply pornography, nudity or sexual acts.
Clothing may not display or imply vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images.
Clothing may not state, imply, or depict hate speech/imagery targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected class.
Sunglasses may not be worn inside the building.
Clothing or accessories that endanger students or staff safety may not be worn. Examples include, but are not limited to, wheeled shoes, chains, studs, spikes, etc.
Apparel, jewelry, accessories, tattoos, or manner of grooming that, by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, denotes membership in a gang or affiliation with any group or individual that advocates illegal, violent or disruptive behavior is prohibited.

There may be special school-sponsored activities for which slight exceptions to the standard of dress are allowed. Examples include spirit days, school-sponsored athletic uniforms, cheer and pom uniforms, and theatre and musical performance attire. Prior approval from the administration must be obtained for special exceptions to the standard of dress.
